NPS Driveway Repairs at Spermaceti Cove Visitor Center Task Order

Project Overview

MFS Construction, LLC (MFS) was contracted by the National Parks Service (NPS) to provide all labor, materials, supplies, tools, and equipment to provide firm and stable pathway surfaces for pedestrians and wheelchairs at Spermaceti Cove Visitor Center Building 436, Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. The existing driveway, which was in poor condition, was replaced with a new pathway, with the goal of improving Visitor Center accessibility from the adjacent parking lot. The new pathway consisted of compacted gravel stone and pressure-treated wood curbs.

Project Details

To complete this project, MFS provided services that included surveying, excavation, and carpentry. MFS began by securing the work area and installing barriers to protect nearby pedestrian traffic. Following site protection measures, to ensure that the driveway was flat and level, a site survey and mark-out was performed. The area was then excavated to attain a depth of 12” at all points, and then backfilled with compacted gravel stone. Pressure-treated wood curbs were installed, flushed with the path, to retain newly placed gravel. The new driveway, two hundred thirty-five feet in length and ten feet wide, connects the parking lot area, and existing multi-use path, to the Spermaceti Cove Visitor Center and adjacent wooden boardwalk. Through the course of the project, MFS provided full-time on-site supervision, as well as project management services, to achieve a high-quality finished product.

This task order was a result of MFS Construction, LLC being awarded an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) Alt/Repair Construction Services Multiple Award Task Order Contract (MATOC) for construction, maintenance, repair, and alteration of real property to support the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA).
