Project Details

The housing on the street dates from the 1890’s to the 1930’s. It is now used for NPS and Coast Guard housing. The sidewalk appears to date from the 1920’s. The issues range from cracked or heaved slabs to slabs that are missing entirely. The objectives of this project are to eliminate trip hazards and puddling with winter icing. A secondary objective is the restoration of the historic sidewalks and walkways.

Prior to work, MFS surveyed the site and surrounding area and carefully noted all environmental and human factors which may be adversely affected by the work. These factors included but are not limited to entry into the work area by people and pets; existing valuable plants including large trees and roots both on and off the site, and slopes with the potential for erosion problems.

As the general contractor, MFS’ role for this project was to remove broken concrete and replace with new concrete to eliminate tripping hazards and puddling on walkways. Sunken asphalt pavement along with their root causes were repaired. All work stayed withing the previous sidewalk footprint. New concrete sidewalk matched existing historic concrete to the nearest degree possible. All areas of disturbed soil were graded smooth, seeded and raked.
